The Nokia N8 has all in one

The Nokia N8 leads the smartphone world when it comes to the latest and greatest specifications and unlike other smartphones that are missing one or more specs, the N8 has it all in one.

here are some very good smartphones available today, but as I continue to evaluate various models and hear about the latest ones, such as the Google Nexus S, I get frustrated by the best devices always leaving something out. I doubt we will ever reach smartphone perfection and no single device will ever satisfy all of us, but if you take an honest look at the specifications and functions across the smartphone world at the moment the Nokia N8 may actually be the closest thing to perfection available today.

As I stated in my earlier hands-on article, existing Symbian fans will love the Nokia N8 while people who have used iOS, webOS, and Android devices may not like the Symbian operating system. Given that the operating system people prefer is highly subjective to what you are used to and what you need to do with a device, let’s take a look at the hardware specifications and functionality outside of the user interface to see why the Nokia N8 stands out above the rest.

There is a TON packed into the Nokia N8 and these specs and features listed here are just those that are above and beyond what we see in other devices today:

Penta-band 3G wireless radio: You can use the N8 on T-Mobile, AT&T, and other carriers around the world (850/900/1700/1900 & 2100 MHz frequencies supported) and currently only the latest Nokia Symbian ^3 devices have this capability.
Bluetooth 3.0
12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and largest sensor found in a camera phone. A Xenon flash is also found to make photographs look fantastic with 720p video capture that includes fabulous zoom capability.
Dual microphones for audio recording quality
HDMI port with FULL TV out of everything on the device
USB on-the-go so you can connect USB flash drives, hard drives, and other peripherals
Aluminum body in five stylish colors
Free Ovi Maps with offline navigation and maps for countries around the world. I never travel to a foreign country without a Nokia device preloaded with maps so I can navigate offline with no data plan required.
FM radio and FM transmitter: Once you have an FM transmitter in your phone you realize how awesome it is to listen to podcasts and your music in the car and at home without any wires.

You might find one or two of these specs in a device, but the Nokia N8 includes ALL of them in a single device that is available for just $549 in a SIM-unlocked manner with NO contract obligation. You can regularly find it popping up on Dell.com for $449 too. I am also a fan of the 3.5 inch OLED display that is fully usable in sunlight. You also cannot beat Nokia for RF reception and phone calls are crystal clear with the phone not dropping calls like so many now just expect with the latest smartphones. I also like that I have 16GB internal with the ability to add a 32GB microSD card.

There are also some hidden features in the Nokia N8 that Nokia never tells you about and these include the ability to use your Zune Pass subscription music and view Amazon Video On Demand movies and TV shows right on the Nokia N8.
The one specification that doesn’t appear to lead the pack, on paper at least, is the 680 MHz processor. Today’s high end smartphones sport 1 GHz processors, but I honestly have not seen any lag in my N8 and the processor has not been an issue. The processor performance is highly dependent on the rest of the hardware and the operating system. Also, keep in mind the N8 has a graphics processor that takes some of the heavy lifting off of the main phone processor.

The N8 also does not support the newest HSPA+ data networks. It does very well with 3G though and the fact that you are not limited by any carrier offsets the faster data speeds, IMHO.

HP reported that 13% revenue increased on Tuesday for its most recent quarter

Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) reported that 13% revenue increased on Tuesday for its most recent quarter, a clear sign that IT spending is on the mend.

While CEO Mark Hurd seemed buoyant over the news in a call with financial analysts, he pushed them to think about the real long-term trends affecting IT buying and not to dwell too much on Europe and the falling Euro. The big trends: population growth, urbanization and the unrelenting need for new devices that kind of growth will create.

"The global demographics are rapidly changing, with a fast-growing middle class population migrating to large cities in emerging markets," said Hurd. "In fact, over the next 20 years the pace of urbanization is estimated to be at the rate of about 60 million people a year - this class of people will be expect to be seamlessly and securely connected to the global community with mobile devices and the underlying infrastructure."

Hurd may be reading government reports, such as a National Intelligence Council forecast, which projects that by the year 2025, some 57% of the world's population will live in urban areas, up from 50% today. "Many -- particularly in Asia -- will be joining the middle class and will be seeking to emulate Western lifestyles, which involve greater per capita consumption of all these resources," the report said.

At a later point in the post-earnings call, Hurd was asked specifically about Apple's iPad and what's HP's response will be. Hurd's response was all big picture, no specifics. Hurd said they "never felt" that "one product or one device would become ubiquitous," meaning he's not worried about the iPad because the world is a big place.

It's also crowded. The world population is now at 6.8 billion and it's expected to rise to about 9 billion in 2020.

What HP does see happening is a world turning to "more and more mobility, not less, and more differentiations between what users want to have in terms of capability," said Hurd. "And we expect to play across the gamut of capability."

Yahoo and Nokia have announced to provide mail and chat services for Nokia customers around the world.

Yahoo and Nokia have announced an alliance that will have the phone providing map services to Yahoo customers on both personal computers as well as mobile devices, while the Sunnyvale Internet company provides mail and chat services for Nokia customers around the world.

The deal, announced Monday in New York by Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, would seek to leverage the strengths of both companies to compensate for the weaknesses of each. Nokia, which is the world's leading mobile-phone manufacturer, would gain access to Yahoo's world-leading base of e-mail subscribers, boosting Nokia's presence in the U.S., where the Finnish company is struggling to compete with fast-growing smartphone platforms such as Apple's iPhone and Google's Android.

"We are clearly the leader in our industry, yet we do not lead in the biggest market in the world — the U.S.," Kallasvuo told reporters in New York. "This is one step we are taking to change that."

Yahoo, meanwhile, would benefit by accessing Nokia's Navteq map services, which the Finnish cell phone company paid $8.1 billion to acquire in 2007. Bartz acknowledged that developing map services, which are crucial to attracting smartphone users, has not been a focus for Yahoo in recent years.

"By using Nokia's map and Navteq services, it will be a much richer experience for our users," Bartz said. She said the alliance would help Yahoo build its audience in developing countries such as Indonesia,

India and Thailand where the primary way many people access the Internet is through their phones.

Given the competitive pressure that both Nokia and Yahoo face from Apple and Google, analysts cheered the alliance — but cautioned that given the rapid pace of change in smartphone technology, the new partners will need to move quickly if they are to gain traction in the fast-changing mobile market.

Yahoo and Nokia "are two companies that clearly need each other," said Scott Ellison, who analyzes the mobile consumer digital marketplace for the research firm IDC.

He suggested in an industry newsletter Monday that the alliance could be a "test run" for an even more involved alliance whose "logical conclusion is potentially a merger," but, he said, the alliance might not be easy to execute well, given the cultural difference between a European handset manufacturer and a Silicon Valley digital media and advertising company.

Ellison said he thinks Nokia and Yahoo have about a year to show progress. "It's a very positive step for both companies," he said, "but it's one where they're going to need to go further quickly."

Nokia and Research In Motion remain the world's leading mobile-phone manufacturers. Nearly 60 percent of smartphones sold around the world in the last quarter of 2009 carried their brands, according to market research firm iSuppli.

But figures compiled by the Gartner research firm show the share of phones sold with Nokia's Symbian operating system is decreasing, while Apple's iPhone OS and Google's Android are both increasing their share of the market. Google said last week that activations of Android smartphones now top 100,000 a day, up from about 30,000 at the end of 2009.

Under the deal, Nokia will be the exclusive provider of maps and navigation services to Yahoo customers around the world, under the brand, "powered by Ovi," Nokia's Internet service brand. Yahoo, meanwhile will become the exclusive provider of e-mail and chat services for Nokia customers, which will be branded as "Ovi Mail" or "Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo."

Financial terms of the deal were not released. The companies also said they would work to provide an integrated log on system for each other's online services. Some selected services are expected to become available in the second half of this year, with global availability

One out of every four American families does not own a landline phone!

Results of a new study show in detail what many have suspected all along: Mobile phones will be the death of the landline.
According to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), one out of every four American families does not own a landline phone. Instead, 25 percent of American households are only using mobile phones. Further reinforcing the primacy of mobile phones, the study found that 15 percent of families that do own landlines receive all or almost all calls through wireless phones.

The study was carried out between July and December of 2009 and included information from more than 21,000 American families.

What the study found was solid evidence of the migration towards mobile technology that has been happening for years. It's no coincidence that the NCHS study also found the numbers of mobile-only phone users skewed to a younger demographic. These people reached adulthood as the cell phone became commonplace. Nearly 50 percent of 25-year-olds did not live in a household with a landline. The vast majority of exclusive cell phone users were under the age of 40.

The study does point out that even though younger adults are more likely to live without landlines, the number of mobile-only adults has increased over the last six years for every age group. The number of families that do not have any telephone service at all, meanwhile, has stayed unchanged for the last few years at around two percent.

The NCHS study turned up more interesting results about people likely to shun landlines. Over 40 percent of home renters had no landlines and were 14 percent more likely to have no landlines than home owners. And those at or near the poverty line were 20 percent more likely to only have mobile phones than their counterparts. Not only does refusing a landline make people more mobile, it's a cost-cutting maneuver.

Of course, one of the biggest questions resulting from the study is "What's a health statistics organization doing conducting surveys about phone lines?"

The study was meant to point out that phone surveys, including health surveys, conducted on landline accounts are no longer representative of the public as a whole because a large portion of the public isn't available by landline.

Naturally, the study did not mention that one of the things mobile users missed least about landlines is hearing the words "Do you have a moment to take a quick survey?"
